Speakers: Dr. Jiawang Liu, PhD, Medicinal Chemistry Core Director and Dr. Michelle Puchowitcz, PhD, MPMS, Pediatrics, Director, Medicine Pediatrics

This Hot Topics session will be shared by Dr. Jiawang Liu (Medicinal Chemistry Core) Dr. Michelle Puchowicz (Proteomics and Metabolomics Core). Each will give a short presentation:

"The application of high performance mass spectrometry in small molecule targeted omics research" by Dr. Puchowicz

Mass spectrometry (MS) as an analytical tool has had a significant role in biological research and in drug development for many decades. Since the early genomics era, metabolic research has progressively evolved from the identification of small to large number of metabolites (metabolomics). This presentation will highlight the use of MS targeted analysis to identify regulatory levels of an organism as a result of changes in concentration patterns of metabolites.

"How to Use MedChem Core to Achieve Your Research Goal" by Dr. Liu

The UTHSC MedChem Core was established in September of 2017 to accelerate drug development and research in the UTHSC research community by providing consultation and laboratory services in medicinal chemistry, synthetic chemistry, and analytical chemistry. In this presentation we will review the performance of MedChem Core and successful service cases in FY2018-2021.

Hot Topics in Research is an educational lunch-and-learn series designed to inform the UTHSC community of opportunities and resources available to them. Attendees will learn about a variety of topics, from institutional support and tools to new policies, regulations and trending topics in the areas of health science education and research.
