Conversations on Health Disparities: Neighborhoods & Built Environment at Online - Through Zoom

Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Join us Wednesday, September 30, 7:00 p.m. for a conversation via Zoom with Dr. Kendra Hotz about Neighborhoods and the Built Environment and their influences on health outcomes. Kendra Hotz, PhD is the Robert R. Waller Chair of Population Health and Director of the Rhodes College Health Equity Program. This event is open to all students, faculty, and staff at UTHSC. Please RSVP via UTHSC Engage and click “I will be attending.”

The choice of where people live may be determined by occupation, income, and social influences. The built environment within the neighborhood influences health " that is, whether there are sidewalks and good lighting to support exercise, grocery stores for access to healthy foods, parks and recreational facilities, and other resources that make it easier to people to take care of themselves and their families. This conversation will allow participants to discuss the impact that the built environment has on health outcomes and the lived experience.

Prior to joining the Conversation, please view two brief lectures by Dr. Hotz via the Conversations on Health Disparities Mediasite Channel. These introductory videos on health disparities and agency bias/structural competence will provide you with the background you need to participate in this discussion. Feel free to submit questions in advance to Dr. Brandy Brown ( This session will be recorded, and a link to the recording will be posted to our Mediasite Channel following the event.
